The Love Junkies Present: TASTE THE HEAT by Love Pusher Rachel Harris!

Title: Taste the Heat

Author: Rachel Harris

Genre: Romance

Age Group: Adult

Release Date: July 8, 2013

Taste the Heat is a sweet and steamy romance that is AVAILABLE NOW!

Love Junkie author Rachel Harris was sweet enough to participate in this Q&A!

  1. What inspired you to write Taste the Heat?

I’m from New Orleans, and I’ve always wanted to write a book set there, to introduce the world to the real heart and soul of the place I grew up—it was just a matter of finding the right story to tell.

One day, my family was sitting around watching Chopped on Food Network because we’re addicted to that show and that’s what we do, when a special episode aired with firefighter chefs. That got me thinking. Later, although I’m a love junkie and could be making this completely up, it appeared as though the female judge and one of the cute firefighters had a bit of a flirtation going on…and thus a story idea was born. What better way to show the world my New Orleans then with a sexy fire captain hero and a Cajun chef? And the bonus??? I had to eat a lot of yummy food for research (ahem, even though I grew up on it and knew how to make it anyway). Score!

If your book had a theme song, what would it be?

I always make a story soundtrack for every book I work on, so I have a whole list of songs that work…and I don’t know if I can pick just one!

Daughters by John Mayer ( is huge, as is Garth Brooks’ version of To Make You Feel My Love (, and Miranda Lambert’s The House That Built Me (

But I also listened to Back Where I Come From by Kenny Chesney ( many times before sitting down to write 😉

Who or what typically gets your creative juices flowing?

I always listen to my soundtrack when I get stuck, when I’m driving, or even when I’m in the shower. I’m a huge plotter so I know in advance almost everything that’s gonna happen, and I choose my songs based on character arcs or plot points, but I’m amazed at how often I get a new scene idea, or an existing scene idea gets even better, when I listen to my soundtrack. Other than that, I reread the scenes I’d written previously and once I’m grinning at the screen, I know I’m ready to jump in.

What type of research did you do for this novel?

For this particular novel, I didn’t have to travel because I grew up there and knew everything really well, BUT my favorite bit of research involved the food. Again, I know how to cook most of these dishes but who wants to take the time to make them all when you can drive down to a favorite restaurant and have an excuse not to cook (he he).

So, anyway, there’s a certain scene in the book (one of my absolute favorites) where Jason feeds Colby blindfolded. My husband and I took the kids to a restaurant and ordered a bunch of yummy dishes, and then yes, we broke out the notebook and took turns eating with our eyes closed, taking notes on what things smelled like, tasted like, felt like in our mouths. Our daughters thought we were hilarious, the wait staff found us a little strange, and the rest of the customers found us a lot strange, but it was fun, we laughed the whole time, and even better, it worked!

Do you have an ideal writing set up? Time of day/night? Location? Snacks?

I’m a homeschooling mama, so I write wherever and whenever I can. McDonald’s playlands rock, as do hotel rooms when my husband is uber generous and gets me a room for a night or two. But most days it’s me, stealing moments of writing time in pockets throughout the day in my pajamas or yoga pants. Ideally, however, I love writing first thing in the morning and then later like late at night when the house is deathly silent and a second wind hits me.

As for snackage? It’s impossible to write without my Dt. Mt. Dew. Impossible I tell you

Worst writing distraction?

As a homeschooling mom, I tend to tune most out as best I can, but when the girls are fighting, the dog is yapping, people are ringing the doorbell attempting to sell random stuff that makes me go O.o, and I’m out of Dt. Mt. Dew, I throw up my hands and quit for the day (ha!)

What can readers look forward to from you in the future?

I have a TON in the works! TASTE THE HEAT of course is my July release and it’s adult contemporary romance. In August, A TALE OF TWO CENTURIES (my young adult companion novel to MY SUPER SWEET SIXTEENTH CENTURY) comes out.

In October, I have book two in my adult series, this time with Colby’s sexy misunderstood bad boy big brother, Cane Robicheaux, and then later this winter I have book three in my young adult series releasing. And in 2014, I have three, possibly four books releasing. It’s a crazy time!

What advice would you give to someone who wants to write and/or publish a book?

Read! Read a ton. And not just in the genre you want to write, but DEFINITELY do that, too. But I find inspiration all over the place, and you never know what may give you a great idea, where you might find a particular style that speaks to you, a snippet of a conversation that sparks something you’d never have thought of otherwise.

While you’re reading, make notes of what you like. What made you laugh aloud, what made you cringe, what had you staying up for another chapter when your eyes were protesting…and then ask yourself WHY. That’s so important. Study your favorite books, scenes, or characters for why they are your favorite. This will help you find your voice and your style. Don’t mimic those things, but use them to help you find your own unique voice and style.

And after all that, surround yourself with other authors. It can be in person at meetings, it can be online, but find other writers who understand what you are going through. Swap pages. Connect. They keep you sane!

Guilty Pleasure: Warm, fresh from the oven, gooey chocolate chip cookies

Can’t Live Without: Other than my husband and girls, it’s honestly a toss up between my Kindle and Dt. Mt. Dew!

#1 on Bucket List: Spend the week in an Irish castle.

Celebrity Crush: If I MUST pick only one, then Channing Tatum. But oh, Adam Levine, Henry Cavill, Ryan Gosling, Alex Pettyfer, Bradley Cooper, Josh Duhamel, Jonathan Rhys Meyers… the list of male hero inspiration goes on and on.

Theme Song of Your Life: Unwritten by Natasha Bedingfield

Embarrassing Turn on: I don’t know if any turn ons are embarrassing…hey, whatever floats your boat, right? But hmm, let’s see. The scent of Mt. Spring detergent?? LOL What can I say, I like the smell 😉

Exclusive Excerpt

“Any chance you’re available Monday?” he asked, holding her gaze for a beat before returning his attention to the road.

In lieu of the exultant whoop she wanted to scream, Colby leaned close to Jason’s ear. Brushing her lips across his skin, and grinning at his sharp intake of breath, she whispered, “I’m always off on Mondays.”

“Well, Hallelujah.”

They both laughed as the truck rolled to a stop in Sherry’s empty driveway. Monday was still five days away, but at this point, she’d take it. Besides, there was virtue in delayed gratification, wasn’t there? The important thing was making sure Jason spent the time between now and then thinking about her—and how good they’d be together when the blessed night finally arrived.

Feeling emboldened by the shadows and their miraculously synched schedules, Colby unfastened her seat belt and slid across the bench seat, her linen pants whispering across the leather as she closed the sliver of distance remaining between them. “Sounds like you’ve got yourself a date, Captain.”

Even in the dim light of the truck’s cab, she could see the wickedness of Jason’s grin. “I can’t wait.”

With a flick of his wrist, the engine fell silent. The headlights went next. They were alone, in the dark, sexual tension snapping, with no preteens sleeping nearby, and no one to interrupt. Jason tossed his seat belt and then one of them moved. She didn’t know whom—didn’t care, either—because then Colby was in his arms. On his lap. Her thighs straddling his hips, his warm hand curved around her neck, and his mouth just shy of touching hers. Right where she wanted to be.

The sound of her harsh, impatient breaths and staccato pulse pounded in her ears. Cinnamon-scented breath fanned across her skin, setting off a fire of anticipation in her blood. She swallowed, her gaze shifting between the planes of Jason’s lips to the swirling desire in his caramel-colored eyes. What was he waiting for? If the man didn’t kiss her soon, she was pretty sure she was going to explode.

An emotion sparked and crossed his face; it almost looked like fear. But before she could read into it or ask what it meant, his mouth came crashing down on hers. Colby sighed, her breath mixing with his. Gripping one hand around the headrest to anchor her, she slid her other down the front of his buttoned shirt and melted into his arms.

She still wasn’t close enough.

Jason deepened the kiss, and she slid her arms around his waist. Dragging her nails up his back and then curling her hands around his broad shoulders, she pulled herself up hard against him, smashing her breasts into the wall of his chest. Jason growled his approval. Plundering her mouth with his lips and tongue, he inhaled her as the steering wheel dug into her back. The pale skin was going to bruise, but she didn’t care. He tasted of cinnamon and temptation, and smelled like heaven.

No one had ever kissed her like this. Devoured her, as if the world could fall apart around them, and it wouldn’t matter. The only thing that did was happening right there in the cab of his rapidly overheating truck. His mouth shifted lower, and the rasp of his stubble against the tender flesh of her neck set off an ache between her legs.

About the Author

Now a Cajun cowgirl living in Houston, she still stays up way too late reading her favorite romances, only now, she can do so openly. She firmly believes life’s problems can be solved with a hot, powdered-sugar-coated beignet or a thick slice of king cake, and that screaming at strangers for cheap, plastic beads is acceptable behavior in certain situations.

Just Breathe by Rachel Brookes

Presented by the Love Junkies…

Title: Just Breathe

Author: Rachel Brookes

Genre: Romance

Age Group: New Adult

Release Date: July 5th, TODAY Y’ALL!!

Purchase: Amazon

Debut indie author Rachel Brookes is a card carrying member of the Love Junkies! So she was kind enough to participate in this Q&A about her novel, Just Breathe!

What inspired you to write Just Breathe?

I am a stubborn Australian who had a big dream to release a book. I have been writing in some form my whole life and in February this year I opened my laptop and began typing and Just Breathe came out.

My inspiration for Just Breathe came from real life. Life is like a crazy rollercoaster and it takes you on a ride to the greatest heights and the lowest lows. Sometimes things happen and you have the choice to either sink or swim. I, as the majority of people, have experienced things that have tested me. Not to go into my personal life too much but I have definitely experienced emotions that Savannah has experienced and I wanted to write a story to show people that even when life isn’t going to plan, you’ve still got to have hope that things will get better, but you’ve got to give it a chance and that’s how Just Breathe came about. I hope that’s what readers get out of it.

If your book had a theme song, what would it be?

When I wrote Just Breathe, I had about 50 songs on my playlist but the one that I think fits them so well would be We are broken by Paramore

Who or what typically gets your creative juices flowing?

Hot guys, the perfect song and an endless supply of Tim Tams…. Music is essential in my writing process. I cannot write in silence and I have playlists for every work in progress I have. I listen to the playlist in headphones and write. It could be a lyric, a beat or a song title that helps.

What type of research did you do for this novel?

Google is my best friend. Because I am Australian, I had to research everything about the USA, from what LA was like, to what football teams were called, and the funniest thing was translating what I would say compared to that of Americans. It was a ride. Fairy floss = cotton candy, washer = wash cloth, thongs = flip flops. It still cracks me up. Google has become my new best friend for research, you should see my search history!

Do you have any rituals or routines you follow when writing or preparing to write a novel?

I must have music playing, I cannot write in silence and I always make sure I read my synopsis before I begin typing anything new.

What’s your ideal writing set up? Time of day/night? Location? Snacks?

I usually sit on my lounge, I do have an office but because I live on my own my lounge becomes my office and my lounge room floor is covered with pieces of paper, photos of inspiration and wrappers of my favourite snacks . I am constantly tapping in notes into my phone when inspiration hits. I usually do most of my writing late at night and I usually snack on Tim Tams, M & M’s and Freckles. Thank god for my gym membership.

What’s your worst writing distraction?

Facebook and Twitter… seriously I am so addicted and I am so easily distracted.

What can readers look forward to from you in the future?

The final book ‘Breathe Again’ will be released before the end of the year, BUT there maybe a little something special between Just Breathe and Breathe Again that I am working on. I also have another series of books begging to be written which will be released early 2014. Tate and Savannah are definitely my focus at the moment but the other characters in my head are very stubborn and wanting to be unleashed.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to write and/or publish a book?

You must read. Read your favourite authors, discover news authors and genres. Find out what you like, what you are comfortable writing, what you could never imagine yourself writing. Just do it. I have started numerous stories that I have pushed to the side because Just Breathe took over everything. Join twitter, its hands down the best thing I have done. I have made amazing friends, met awesome people and found a sounding board of like-minded people. Write for yourself and listen to the characters overtaking your mind, they know what they want.

For Savannah Rae, living life without her parents was unimaginable. But being blamed for her first love’s suicide? That destroyed every part of who she was.

Gone were the days of innocence, happiness, and dreams. Now her days simply meant attempting to survive. In her mind, her only means for that was replacing her grief with men, booze and the fast life. And for five years, it worked.

When an opportunity to leave the nightmares of her past in Australia opens up, she takes it. Los Angeles beckons – with hopes of late nights, new beginnings, and the promise of a string of endless men to distract her, she can’t wait to dive in.

One thing she didn’t count on was meeting her match.

In the eyes of outsiders, Tate Connors has it all; the ultimate LA bachelor who is content with his lifestyle of wild nights, women and one night stands. He’s Mr. Unpredictable with looks that could destroy any woman with one glance.

The craziness of Los Angeles throws them into the chaotic path of each other. Savannah becomes the perfect game, and Tate becomes the ultimate prey. Lines are crossed, emotions are smashed, and the idea of who they truly are begins to be tangled.

However, one thing will become clear.

They are more alike than either one could ever have imagined.

I stiffened as soon as I felt someone stand way too close behind me. I knew that I was the only one waiting for the lift, so why the hell did they feel the need to stand this close? I could feel the person’s breath on the back of my neck and I could feel the heat of the person’s body against me. Mix a lack of sleep, a lack of substantial food for eighteen hours and an inconsiderate person stealing my personal space, and you’ve got one very angry Australian ready to pounce.
I was ready to explode at the creep who had decided my personal space was not important, but I lost all ability to speak when I swung around. My perfect prey was within inches of me, his deep blue eyes watching me and drawing me in. My body ignited and I was sure that he could feel the lust that was oozing off my body. A smirk lingered on the lips I wanted to nibble, and the way his body was so close to mine stunned me into submission.
I stepped into the awaiting lift and knew by the way my body came alive that he was close behind me, sans the giggling girl. My back pressed hard against the cold metal wall opposite him. We didn’t say a word too each other but we didn’t have to. Leaning against the wall with his masculine arms folded over his chest, his eyes burned holes in mine and I was lost in theintensity of his gaze. A soft sigh escaped my lips as his eyes ran up and down my body again, and the moment he bit his bottom lip, I nearly lost all control right there in the lift. I felt my body scorch under his gaze, and I couldn’t deny the reaction I had to him. He was quite possibly the most attractive man I had ever had the pleasure of staring at, and I wanted him in every sense of the word.“This is my stop,” I whispered as the lift halted to a jerky stop. The door slowly opened, but it didn’t eradicate the electricity that was firing between us. My breath escaped me as soon as he took a slow step toward me, breaking the space I had put between us. I felt the heat between us soar. His hand swung behind me and he pounded the stop button to cease the door closing. His eyes were searching every inch of my face and I sighed again as his eyes hovered over my mouth. His lips curved at the sound of my sigh, he was clearly enjoying the trauma he was putting my body through. The thought of ripping his clothes off like a wild animal and taking him in the lift almost overcame me. His intense eyes didn’t leave me as he leaned down toward me. I watched his lips closely as they made their way toward me in all of their pink and pouty glory, that bottom lip…god, I’d love to bite it. I took a deep breath as I felt his breath on my ear. “I’ll be seeing you,” he murmured in a voice that was deep, gravelly and intoxicating. The feeling of promise lingering in his words excited every inch of my now highly responsive body.
I stepped out of the lift with shaky legs, almost forgetting to wheel my suitcase behind me. I didn’t hesitate; I turned to bask in his glory one last time. He rested against the back wall of the lift with a confidence that made me nervous. Guys never made me nervous, so this was a strange feeling to have butterflies circling my stomach. I bit my lip and focused my eyes on his as he gave me his best panty-dropping smile and I threw one back at him. The tension between us was increasing by the second. The apartment could be on fire and I wouldn’t have noticed, I’d still be standing here, having a smirk-off with him. The glass doors shut in front and broke the tension around me. My conversation with Mr. Davenport started replaying in my head. How was I going to resist what I had left in the lift?
